City of Quesnel Public Works Department: Solid Waste

The City of Quesnel uses a garbage truck with an automated arm that lifts cans supplied by the City (at no cost to the resident).

About the carts

There are three basic things to remember when you're using your new cart.

Park it

Make sure you park the cart at the edge of the curb or roadway with the lid closed.

Point it

Once you've rolled your cart out, make sure the arrow on the top of the cart points toward the street. Don't overfill your cart, it can cause messes that may attract wildlife.

Space it

Put it out by 8 a.m. and make sure you leave plenty of room between your cart and other carts, parked cars or other obstacle. A good arm's length between your cart and anything else will help ensure reliable pickup.

Don't overfill your cart and make sure the lid is closed.

Check the serial number on your cart and write it down. This number is assigned to your address - if you move, don't take your cart with you, contact public works and we'll make sure there's a cart for you at your new residence.

The standard cart size is 250 litres, a bit more than the current two-bag limit. However, if you feel you need a larger cart, you can get one - but there is an added fee of $65 per year.

Schedule

Although the South Quesnel area is part of the city, residents there have the option of having their garbage colelcted by a private contractor.

Commercial / Industrial Solid Waste Collection:

Commercial and industrial waste collections are scheduled over five days per week, Tuesday to Saturday. The monthly rates depend upon the number and size of containers and the number of pickups per week.

Trade Waste Container Collection Rates Per Week:
· 1 pick-up per week - $1.67 per cubic yard collected.
· 2 pick-ups per week - $1.83 per cubic yard collected.
· 3 pick-ups per week - $2.01 per cubic yard collected.
· 4 pick-ups per week - $2.24 per cubic yard collected.
· 5 pick-ups per week - $2.49 per cubic yard collected.
· 6 pick-ups per week - $2.78 per cubic yard collected.

Trade Waste Container Rental Rates Per Month:
· 3 cubic yard containers - $14 each
· 4 cubic yard containers - $16 each
· 6 cubic yard containers - $20 each

Commercial customers may choose from three-, four-, and six cubic-yard bins, which the City will provide and deliver.

Bins will be emptied according to a schedule set between the customer and the City. All bins must be emptied at least once per week. All items must be placed inside the bin so the lid closes to control odour and litter. All garbage must be placed in the bin. To deter unauthorized use, the customer can install a lock provided that the bin is unlocked on pickup day.

Commercial bins

Please give right-of-way to the garbage truck. It is a difficult vehicle to manoeuvre in the access lanes.

Having a car parked in front of your bin means it can't be emptied. Please make sure the garbage truck has sufficient access.

Garbage left next to bins will not be collected. Compacting your garbage can reduce your required bin size and save space in the landfill. If your bin is too small, now is the perfect opportunity to upsize.

Not acceptable in your garbage bin:
Cardboard, hazardous waste, liquid-filled containers, hot ashes, sod, dirt, rock, cement, car batteries, tires, appliances or furniture
Industrial waste

Please recycle
