The Public Works division has many responsibilities and provides a wide variety of services to the public.
It maintains 100 km of streets, 22 km of lanes and 100 km of sidewalks, covering every aspect of maintenance from sweeping streets, filling potholes and putting in wheelchair accessible sidewalks to snow removal. This division is also responsible for carrying out the City's Capital Works Program, which can involve more than $1 million per year in projects from the construction of new parks to the construction of major roads.

Overview
The Department of Public Works and Engineering, the largest
department at City Hall, employs as many as 63 summer employees and 41
winter staff. The Department's functions and staff are divided into five
divisions: Public Works and Capital Projects, Utilities, Mechanical Maintenance,
Parks and Solid Waste, and Airport / Transit Operations. The following
is a breakdown of each department and some of the responsibilities and
services provided by each.
