What can I do?

Sustainability is all about community involvement. The City needs residents and businesses to be involved actively as we strive to improve sustainability.

Bill 27 and the Official Community Plan

One of the first things the new Community Sustainability Committee did was review the requirements of Bill 27. This requires the City to add greenhouse gas reduction targets, policies and actions to its Official Community Plan by May 31, 2010. The committee recommended that City Council adopt the following targets:

  • 33% below 2007 levels by 2020
  • 80% by 2050.

The following actions and policies are also included in the OCP amendment to support the progression to a sustainable community.

  1. Promote public education of the need for local food production.
  2. Adopt and implement a Sustainability Checklist based on sustainable policies.
  3. Utilize Integrated Community Sustainability Planning to identify additional targets.
  4. Implement climate change relevant polices to achieve reduction of greenhouse gas emissions at the community and corporate levels.
  5. Promote education for community members and businesses.
  6. Utilize an anti-idling bylaw to raise awareness around vehicle emissions.
  7. Implement a water conservation program.
  8. Work towards implementing a community composting program.
  9. Support and encourage energy efficiency in the Industrial Sector.

How else can I help?

There is a wide range of initiatives people can take on to improve our community.

Get involved

Volunteering is a great way to improve the social and cultural fabric of our community. Find a service club, join a fire department, raise money for a cause - these are ways in which you can help.

Be informed

Knowing about, and understanding, the many initiatives taking place in our community is vital. Be aware of your government , local, provincial and federal, and the initiatives it is proposing. Learn more about how your government works. Attend meetings and read, tune in and listen to local media.

Take responsibility

Carpool, recycle, improve energy efficiency, plant a tree - we can all do more to ensure our environment is sustainable for ourselves and our future.

This is, after all our Quesnel.
