City of Quesnel Planning Department

Long Range Policy

This function of the Department is the foundation upon which Quesnel builds its vision. This vision is commonly expressed through policies in the Official Community Plan. For more information on the Long Range Policy, click here.

Development Review

The Development Review function is to make recommendations to Council relating to development applications for Official Plan amendments, Zoning bylaw amendments, condominium proposals and Agricultural Land Reserve appeals. Staff is also responsible for minor development permit applications in addition to reviewing development proposals submitted by the Cariboo Regional District for fringe area development. Subdivision Approval

The Subdivision Approving Officer reviews all subdivision applications to ensure compliance with the Provincial Land Title Act and the City’s Official Community Plan. (Subdivision includes the creation of several properties from one or more existing properties, the realignment of existing property lines and the consolidation of two or more properties into one.) Building Inspections

The Planning and Development Services Department is also responsible for the administration of the building and plumbing bylaws including the issuance of permits and field inspections of construction work for compliance with applicable codes. For Building Inspections information, click here.

GIS Mapping

Mapping, reference materials and information packages are made available through the Department. We provide drawings, plans, aerial photography, maps and information to Corporate staff, the general public, public agencies, home builders, developers, etc. Investments in technology will lead us to become a fully integrated and computerized information developer through the use of Geographic Information System (GIS).

What We Do

The City of Quesnel Planning Department's mandate is to assist City Council in the delivery of programs that address the health, welfare and safety requirements of growth management issues affecting the City. This mandate and the associated programs are ultimately linked to the quality of life of our residents. In addition, the Department provides resources to other departments, and is an information provider to the public and business sectors on economic development and growth related activities.

The Department's responsibilities encompass six service areas: Long Range Policy Planning, Development Review, Building Inspection, Planning Information Services, Subdivision Approval and Bylaw Enforcement

Our Mission Statement

The Mission of the Planning and Development Services Department is to provide excellent customer service by providing timely and accurate planning and building inspection services to the general public and development community. It guides the overall development vision of the City to protect and enhance the area's natural and man-made environment, its economic base and its neighbourhoods to achieve a high quality of life.
