A penalty is added to the current year's taxes that are unpaid at 4:30 p.m. on July 2, 2010, including that portion of the property taxes that may be offset by a Homeowner Grant that has not been claimed. Please claim your current year's Homeowner Grant by this due date, even if you choose not to make a payment at this time.

The deadline for application under the Property Tax Deferment Program for the current year's taxes is July 2, 2010. Please contact City Hall to see if you qualify for this Program.

An Annual Tax Sale is held on the last Monday of September. Properties with delinquent taxes are subject to this sale.

Current year taxes and utilities that are due and outstanding on January 1, 2011 will be transferred to taxes as arrears. Arrears and delinquent property taxes are subject to interest.

The last date to claim a Retroactive Homeowner Grant for 2009 is December 31, 2010. Visit City Hall with your driver's licence and Care Card and complete the necessary form. As it requires approval by the Homeowner Grant Branch in Victoria, B.C. please be prepared to provide at least two additional samples of proof of residency, such as a utility bill or bank statement.

Business Licences

The annual Business Licences are due and payable January 31 in any given year. Business Licence renewals are normally mailed out in the middle of January.

Responsibilities

The Finance Department is responsible for financial record keeping, reporting, and safekeeping of Municipal Assets, and investment of municipal funds. The Director of Finance/Collector, with the assistance of a Corporate Services Supervisor, five accounting Clerks and two Cashier/Receptionists perform all duties associated with property tax and utility notification and collection, accounts payable and receivable, budget analysis reporting, production of financial reports, and maintaining records of tickets, fines and other municipal business.

Avoiding Long Line-ups

Here are some options that will eliminate having to wait in line on tax and utility due dates.

Postdated cheques
You can pay your taxes with a postdated cheque to the tax due date. This will allow City staff time to check your payment and Homeowner Grant Application. Staff can notify you prior to the due date if there are any issues with your payment or grant application. The payment is not processed or deposited in the bank until the date of the cheque.

Payment drop box
There is a payment drop box located at the front entrance of the building. Place your cheque and/or Homeowner Grant in an envelope and drop it in the box. Your payments will be processed promptly each morning (Monday to Friday).

If your Mortgager (Bank) pays your taxes
Even if your bank pays your taxes, you will still have to claim your Homeowner Grant (if eligible). Any Homeowner Grants not claimed by 4:30 p.m. on the tax due date will be subject to a 10% penalty as unpaid taxes. To avoid a penalty, claim your grant as soon as you receive your tax notice. To avoid lineups or penalties associated with problems with your Homeowner Grant, applications should be sent or taken to City Hall as soon as you receive your tax notice. Don't wait until the tax due date.
